  • You’ve probably already come across the term “ketogenic diet” in your search for information on diet for dogs with cancer. Essentially, a keto diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet designed to lead the body into a state called ketosis. In ketosis, the body primarily relies on ketones, derived from fats, for energy rather than carbohydrates (glucose). ➡️ What’s the goal of a keto diet? We know that cancer cells prefer glycose for energy. So, by changing the diet to a high-fat, low-carb diet, theoretically, the body will use fat as energy while cancer cells are starved. ➡️ Is there evidence to support keto diets for dogs with cancer? There is some early stage evidence suggesting that ketogenic diets may be beneficial in slowing the progression of some types of cancer in dogs. However, clinical evidence is limited. Most of the research on ketogenic diets and cancer has been conducted in laboratory settings or in humans, and translating these findings to dogs is not straightforward. What this means is that we need more studies to establish the long-term effectiveness and safety of ketogenic diets for dogs with cancer. ➡️ My two pennies worth: Before embarking on a keto diet, please consider this: To reach a state of ketosis, a dog’s diet must consist of a high percentage of fat, often above 70% of dry matter (DM). However, it’s essential to remember that this approach is not suitable for all dogs. A very high-fat diet can lead to gastrointestinal issues and even severe and life threatening conditions like pancreatitis. For this reason, it’s crucial to understand your dog’s tolerance to high-fat food and evaluate the potential risks before jumping on this dietary regimen, because the consequences could be severe. This isn't meant to discourage you but rather to emphasise informed decisions. Every dog is unique. Before making any dietary changes, consult with a veterinarian or qualified canine nutritionist. 😊🐶❤️

  • And the answer is... 🥁 👇 👇 👇 A vegetarian diet! Did I hear a confused ‘what’!? 🤔 Okay, let me explain: To reduce the likelihood of urate stone formation, our primary goal is to reduce your dog’s intake of purines. Without the purines that trigger urate stone formation, even dogs with a genetic predisposition can lead normal lives. Foods that are high in purines include: 🐟 Seafood 🐓Poultry 🥩 Red meats, particularly organ meat such as kidneys and liver. The foods listed below are considered virtually purine-free: 🥛 Dairy products 🍲 Tofu 🥚 Eggs 🥦 Most vegetables 🍎 Fruits For this reason, a low purine diet typically focuses on vegetarian ingredients. 🌱🐶 In case you’re still skeptical, click the link in bio and head to our blog page. Search for “urate bladder stones” for more information. #ElmosKitchen #DogNutritionist #VegetarianDogDiet #DogHealth #LowPurineDiet #UrateStones #PetNutrition #PetWellness #Dalmatian #HealthyDog #UricAcidStones #PetEducation #BladderStones

  • Avocado is one of those really controversial foods. Some say yes, others remain skeptical. Would I feed a whole avocado to a small dog? No. Would I worry about a small amount of avocado flesh? No. Here’s the low down: Avocados contain a toxin named persin. Although dogs are more resilient to persin compared to many other animals, this doesn't mean that avocados are 100% safe to feed your dog. The exact amount of persin that poses lethal risks remains unknown - but a minor slice of avocado is generally considered safe. Another risk is the high fat content of avocados which can trigger stomach upset, vomiting, and even pancreatitis. Additionally, digestive obstruction can occur if your dog swallows the large pit at the centre of the fruit. It can get stuck in the oesophagus, stomach, or intestinal tract of your dog. Safer fruit options to add to your dog’s food include: blueberries, raspberries, apples, melon, banana and pear. For more tips and advice on fruits in you dogs diet, head to our blog page (link in bio) and search for fruits & vegetables. #Avocado #CanDogEat #HealthyDogs #ElmosKitchen #DogNutritionist #AvocadoDogDebate #ToxicFoodAlert #CanineDietDilemme #DogDietTips #HealthyOrHarmful #KnowYourDogFoods

  • 👇👇👇 🐶Filtration: Imagine your dog's blood flowing through a high-tech filtration system. That's precisely what the kidneys do! These incredible organs filter out waste products and toxins, transforming them into urine, which is then flushed out of the body. Thanks to their ‘detox’ superpowers, your dog stays free from harmful substances that could cause trouble. 🐶Fluid balance: The kidneys play a vital role in maintaining fluid balance within your dog's body. They help prevent both dehydration and overhydration by regulating water intake and output. 🐶Regulation of blood pressure: They produce a hormone called renin, which keeps blood pressure normal. 🐶Acid-base balance: They play a critical role in maintaining the body's acid-base balance, also know as pH balance. 🐶Red blood cell production: The kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO) which stimulates the bone marrow to make more red blood cells. These red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body's tissues and organs, which is vital for their proper functioning. 🐶Activation of Vitamin D: The kidneys convert inactive vitamin D into its active form. This crucial task ensures proper absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestines, maintaining strong and healthy bones. #Dogs #KidneyFacts #ElmosKitchen #DogNutritionist #PetNutrition #CanineCare #Powerhouses #DogTrivia
